For information and history, last year in august 2009 Drupalcon Paris got 270.000 EUR held by Paypal because of... the H1N1 flu, apparently!

One of us had to fight 24/24 more than a week -- and get via contacts to top paypal executives while at the same time being blocked at the lowest risk management level (the "firstname" level) -- to unfreeze the funds euro by euro.

Obviously, Paypal almost precipited what they feared: the cancelling of the conference. Oh, irony....

I hate PayPal too! For month I have been trying to get my statements certified since all my expenses and income went thought them. The tax office refused the my home printed document - and they said it's either a printed statement from PayPal or a letter that certifies the home printed documents.... I tried for 3 month, called around 20 times... They always said yes it's being done, and it's not a problem, on the last day they say they can't do it.... Frustration, you tell me about it...

They have monopoly and are in more country than any other provided .... I have no other choice for the moment.

john p. & cali! better than focusing on the problem (paypal, who now have told you they jez don't care much to do the money exchange for events), how about an easy solution? come to brownpapertickets.com. great washington-state based start-up business, very friendly to on-line, community & tech events, and a self-described "fair trade ticket" company (read: no overly huge fees like ticket master). no, i'm not employed by them nor have used them personally for an event, except to buy tickets, but i know folks who have used them in the past and simply love them (http://backfencepdx.com). give 'em a look see.

Have you ever tried Brown Paper Tickets? http://www.brownpapertickets.com/faq.html

I've only had good experiences as a buyer. I wasn't able to find information on availability in various countries, but there are events posted for the US and the UK.

I have to respond because I have had nothing but negative experiences with pay pal (and eBay) since eBay purchased them. The last time I sold something on eBay it took 4 months from my initial posting until I finally received my money. My individual experience was not just with Pay Pal but with both eBay and Pay Pal. All I can say is it was ridiculous how many times I had to prove who I was and that I was doing legitimate business. I had to contact the purchaser (post purchase) to request that he tell Pay Pal that not only did he receive the box that I shipped (which he had already done) but that he was also satisfied with it. They refused to send my money until he wrote the approval letter.

I was so irate with all the stuff that they made me go through. I was out of work at the time and I was selling something that was very valuable to me out of necessity. The fact that it took that much work, that much stress(dealing with their process and their customer support if you want to call them that), and it took that long was nothing less that painful and ridiculously unnecessary.

Since that incident I refuse to either Pay Pal or eBay unless I absolutely have to. I am sorry to hear that you guys have had similar headaches and I am very glad that you are being vocal about it.

BTW - In the future you might look into some of the services that Adobe's business catalyst offers. They have a huge list of eCommerce vendors to choose from plus it can be combined with all their other services (including email marketing, etc.). Just a thought.

I'm a little late reading this but wanted to point to this CNN story about Paypal and the BBB:-

http://news.cnet.com/2100-1017-251418.html

Apparently Paypal do care about customer service and are keen to clean up their reputation (said the 3 milligram fly to the 5lb dog poop).

I have never read anything positive about them, yet like everyone else I have an account with them (well everyone except you John).

It would be nice to be given a choice.

Draft Media Release

“It is with very great sadness that eBay’s Chief Headless Turkey, John Donahoe (aka “Peter Principle”—among many other derogatory terms), announces the probable demise of eBay’s most ugly daughter, PayPal. PayPal is about to be stricken by particularly virulent strains of Visa+CyberSource and Mastercard Open Platform, aggravated by PayPal’s insurmountable lack of direct financial institutions participation and a great deal of PayPal user/merchant dissatisfaction, particularly with respect to PayPal’s grossly unfair, “all responsibility avoiding” UA, totally primitive risk management processes, and grossly unprofessional, buyer-biased, fraud-facilitating, transactions mediation.

“PayPal’s health may therefore be expected to deteriorate and, if ultimately not completely incapacitated, will most likely be eventually confined to its mandatory offering on what little there will be by then left of the Donahoe-devastated eBay marketplaces. There is no cure for this condition, and the “eBafia Don” is particularly saddened by the inevitable presumption that it is unlikely that PayPal will be able to continue to underpin eBay’s sagging bottom line in the future.”

Also, unlike all other payments processors operating in Australia, PayPal has declined to sign up to the payments processors’ “Code of Conduct”. The clear message therefrom is “users beware”!

The fact is, had the original developers of the “bankcard” concept ever behaved the way PayPal behaves, credit/debit cards would never have gotten off the ground, and we would still be paying for all our purchases with pieces of paper and little metal discs.

A detailed examination of and prognosis for PayPal (including a further link to the “PayPal Horror Tour”) at:
